About Us
Glendale Wilderness Lodge is operated by the 9/10th Dublin Aughrim Street Scout Group. It was opened in 2024, fifty-nine years after the opening of the first Glendale Lodge on St. Patrick’s Day 1965. The original Lodge was built by members of the Group’s Knight Errand Clan (now known as Rover Scouts), on land made available for a nominal rent by a friend of the Group. Electricity was installed in 1968, with piped water (a luxury!) installed in 1984.

History of the Lodge
Glendale Wilderness Lodge was opened in 2023, fifty-eight years after the original Glendale Lodge was opened on St. Patrick’s Day 1965. The original Glendale Lodge was built by members of the 9/10th Dublin (Aughrim Street) Knight Errand Clan (now known as Rover Scouts).
The original Lodge was built from long planks of timber, taken from crates which carried car parts to the Brittain Works in Rathmines, Dublin. The timber cabin consisted of a simple kitchen and small dormitory with four bunks. Special events held by the Knights at the Lodge were 21st Birthday parties and watching the Eurovision Song Contest (in black and white, of course).
Drinking water was drawn from a nearby stream, while fuel for the fire was taken from the turf banks on the nearby Featherbeds, courtesy of Lord Powerscourt. The height of the trees in the forest are testament to the latrine disposal method used in the early years!
The land upon which the Lodge sits was purchased for £5,000 (€6,350) in 1991 and soon after, in 1993, the Lodge was extended with the addition of a small dorm, a small bedroom and toilet / shower facilities. Thus, it was until 2019 when the Group Council decided that the time had come for a replacement. The opportunity was also taken to purchase some valuable forestry for bivvying and hammocking.
Neatly nestled in the Glencree Valley, and within sight of Tonduff North & South, Djouce and Glencullen Mountains, the Lodge has been an oasis of calm (and sometimes not) for thousands of young and old over the past fifty-eight years. Long may it continue…
About the Lodge
Glendale Wilderness Lodge is a non-for-profit outdoor activity centre owned, operated, and maintained by the youth members and Scouters of the Aughrim Street Scout Group (A.S.S.G.) on a voluntary basis.
We offer a base for Scout and other youth groups to experience the wonder of the out of doors, nature, and adventure, in a safe environment. The Lodge was first built in 1964 by what was then the Knight Errand Clan, it was extended in 1993 and rebuilt in 2023.
